I'm worn thin.
Since the economy is so bad the majority of people who have been laid off from their jobs have gone back to school. Good for them I say! Get your education. It's great for someone to take a bad situation and better themselves through it.

Unfortunately there's a downside. With people going back to school, there's too many people there, and not enough parking. Pellissippi is seeing this too.

My problem comes from me having asthma. The mile hike to my first class is leaving me winded enough to send me into an asthma attack, which is hard on me physically. I tried to think of why it is only school that bothers me this way. I think I know why.

Most of the things I do I don't need to be out side for more than going to and from the car. Going to work for instance, I go from the house to the car then from the car to the building I work in. I'm not doing as much walking at one time in the cold weather (or in the case of warmer months not out with all my allergens for as long) as I am at school. I have had to stop taking the stairs at school due to this. Last semester there was 100 steps I HAD to climb just to get to my first class. I only know this because one of my classmates counted since she was annoyed. The spiral steps I have to take this semester, there's probably more, and I'm not going to find out.

At school I'm doing all the walking at once in the cold, just after I had a bought of bronchitis which makes everything even worse. It's making it harder for me to breathe, at least until my lungs fully heal from being invaded. I got annoyed at the lack of close parking since just about everyday at school I have had to park in the farthest parking area from the school. I mean you can hardly SEE the buildings for the school from here. They are even farther away than the pyramids if you get my drift here.

I called student services today to see if there's anything they could help me out with since it's becoming a huge problem for me. Bascially there isn't anything THEY can do for me, but I can talk to the government about a disability tag... first thing that popped into my head is WHAT??????

I don't know how I feel about that. When I've not JUST been sick the hike wouldn't bother me. But I just had bronchitis less than a month ago. I just don't know about this. What do you guys think? I don't want to take a disabled parking spot from someone who could really use it, like someone who has a wheelchair. I'd feel shameful. But at the same time the close parking would make it easier on my lungs and wouldn't wear me out. Is there something else that maybe I don't know about that someone else does?

Before I finished reading your post, I was thinking to myself that you should apply for a disability tag for your car so that you can use a closer handicapped parking spot. I think I would definitely look into that. If that isn't enough, since the parking sounds like it's still pretty far, then how about bringing along something that will help you get from the lot to the buildings more quickly and with less effort... I'm thinking: a bicycle or skates. If you bring a bicycle, you could attach your book bag to it so you don't have to lug it around. If Segways were cheaper, I'd go for that personally! Smile I would expect the building to have an elevator in it somewhere. As far as I know, all public buildings MUST have handicapped access. What do the students in wheelchairs do??

If you are having a health related problem that is getting in the way of enjoying your education, it is a "disability". All disabilities don't include wheel chairs and crutches. I say, talk to your physician, get him to verify your asthma and apply for a permit.

I'm so thankful that you guys said something positive to me because in talking with other people they've all told me to keep at it and it will get better but seriously having an asthma attack to and from the car isn't healthy for me. Tanya (I believe that's your name), I think you have a point that I hadn't even considered. Thank you for that.

There are elevators in the building and I've been using them. The steps were about to murder me. I think I'm going to actively pursue a disability tag then. Thanks so much ladies.

I went to my doctor and he filled out a DMV application for me to take to DMV. I needed it and I'm not ashamed. Sometimes the handicapped spaces are all taken anyway.
