Need a new car soon (4 comments)
|
I need a new car. My current car is a 2000 Nissan Maxima with 198000 miles. It's been a great car the past seven years. I've put a lot of money into maintenance though with the goal of keeping it at least through 2010. I think it is wiser financially to pay off a car and keep it as long as possible even while you pay for repair and maintenance. I had paid it off a couple years ago but when I bought my house, I put a loan against it to consolidate some credit card debt with a low rate. I've been paying extra to get it paid off but I still have 9 payments towards that loan due to be paid off the end of this year.
I had a service engine soon light go on and the work for that will be anywhere between $600-$1100. I just paid $300 to get an oil change, belts changed and for the diagnostic. I just don't want to put that much money into it anymore at this point.
The thing is my car is still in really good condition aside from this problem. The problem is not a thing that needs to be fixed immediately but soon. Basically it sounds like there is some carbon buildup in the intake system that needs to be cleaned out. Greek to me. But if I need the extra parts that is where the bigger expense comes in and the labor is a lot because it takes so long to get in there and see what exactly is wrong.
I've been thinking about cars and what I want since I was planning on getting a new car anyway the end of this year. I want to get a "family" car that seats 7 without breaking the bank so we can seat everyone in one car when needed and then DBF will buy a commuter car when he is due to get a car in a couple years. (He currently has a Saturn SUV) I've been leaning towards a minivan like a Toyota Sienna or Volkwagon Routan because it just makes the most sense usability-wise but neither DBF or I are keen on the minivan idea. So I was also looking at some SUV's or crossovers that hold 7 but again aren't super big or super expensive like maybe the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander or Hyundai Veracruz. The plan is to buy used with low(ish) mileage. Cost between $15000-25000. We are looking at foreign models. He used to have a Ford Windstar and then his Saturn and I had two Dodge vehicles and we just weren't too excited about those. DBF wants to look at Volvo or Lexus but I am just not a Volvo or Lexus person. I am much more a Toyota or Honda person! While I can find a higher end car for $22000 the mileage is more like 60000 whereas a Honda Pilot is 25000 for the same price. (Rounding figures.) Makes no sense to me while I am trying to be frugal!
DBF wants the plan to be to wait and see with my car and not fix it immediately and try to pay off the loan sooner (like in 4-6 months) and then buy a new (used) car. I on the other hand am now chomping at the bit for a new car. I don't want to pay the money to fix the car and I don't want to just wait until my car just stops working. So I hope we go look this weekend. I am the kind of person to get something in my mind and then I go and do it! DBF looks, thinks, plans, waits, looks some more, thinks waits, etc. Which is not a bad way but it will drive me crazy!
If anyone has any thoughts on a mid level SUV, minivan or crossover that holds 7 passengers, let me know!
