Snow day (0 comments)

I feel like such a bum because I cancelled my two morning classes because of the winter storm warning, and we haven't had a single flake yet! I'm starting to suspect that I could have gone and taught my classes and been back home before the worst hits us. Since I live a little more than an hour away from the school and most of the other faculty live nearby, I'm afraid that they'll think I'm just looking for an excuse not to work - which is far from the truth, since I'd much rather be there than at home with two stir-crazy kids! My students have their first test next week and I'm worried that my missing this one day will make the difference between prepared and failing - a bit exaggerated, I know.
Anyway. I had another faculty member observe my class this week and she was very impressed, which made me feel better about my teaching abilities and future at the institution. Now I have three good reviews in my portfolio, plus this award, so I should be in as good shape as anyone when it comes time to renew. Otherwise, everything is in a state of flux, with faculty trying to determine how to cut the adjunct budget in half. They might eliminate the graduate program, which is small anyway, and I don't think it's a bad idea, though I admit I don't know that much about the history of the school and the arguments for and against.
DH had his first week of class today, and his first experiment with his new schedule - he only teaches on Tuesday and THursday, though he's on the go all day those days. He actually requested this schedule even before we knew that we wouldn't be able to afford daycare for Gatinha, but I am worried that it might cause more stress than it solves. On MWF, he's home with her in the morning, trying to write, research, do professerly things, and thank God she's such an easy baby because it is possible to do so in a way that it never was with Flips. Yesterday I worked at home and Gatinha took a nice three-hour nap for me, and then played on her own for at least another hour after that. Flips still likes his school and they hired a new teacher for him this week so next week he's in his own room with the other three-year-olds.
