 Another surgery
Johnny's eye
(3 comments)

So I believe I've written in here before that my son was born with Ptosis, which means that the muscle on one side of his face never fully developed.  Blessedly the problem affects only his eye.  he's able to smile and move his face as needed, those sorts of things.  But his eyelid does not function properly.  As a baby we would patch his good eye to try to make him use the other eye.  But as he got older it was harder and harder for him once he was in an upright position.  Still, he's a nosy child and so even as a baby he would tilt his head back to try to look under the eyelid.  The good news is, it kept him from losing vision in his eye and according to his opthomologist he has great vision and most kids with this problem have vision loss by this age.

When he was about 15 month's old he had his first surgery.  He had to have a surgery to raise the eyelid so he COULD use the eye and also so he wouldn't start having back/neck problems from tilting his head back all the time to try to see.  A week after his first surgery he went back to daycare and got a severe black eye right on the surgically repaired eye.  Needless to say we switched daycares when the daycare couldn't tell us what happened and the director told us she felt it was OUR fault for having brought him back to school too soon.  But the damage was already done and when he was 3 he wound up having to have another surgery (same one) to fix the first surgery since the ties which had been attached all became stretched out/undone due to the black eye.

The 2nd surgery went fine and we had no other incidents.  The new daycare was really great about being careful once he returned and also did exercises with him to try to get him to use the eye.  However, there are 3 ties and the one on the outside corner of eye  has been irritated for months now.  I guess the skin was trying to reject it?  Then about 2 weeks ago I noticed he had something on his eyebrow.  i thought it was a flake of skin, but at closer glance saw it was like a piece of fishing wire....  the stitch had come through his skin.  So now he has to have another surgery to correct this.  I'm hoping this one is much less major.  The first two surgeries required cutting through the eyelid and attaching the muscle to his eyebrow muscle.  Since nothing is detatched, I'm thinking they should just be able to go through the top part of the eye brow to fix this.  So fingers crossed his eyelid isn't affected.

And now of course the money rant.  I cannot believe how much this is going to set us back.  I have a 20% copay.  His last 2 surgeries cost me approx $150 each time (not including anesthesia).  But this time they are telling me I owe $400 at time of service!  $400!  That's more than 3 times what it's been the other two times.  And as far as I know this should be a more simple procedure.  Plus the anesthesiologist will cost me at least $500 (which as been the case before, but who knows if that'll double or triple too) as they are usually never in network and will cost me 40%!  Sigh...  so I just climbed out of the hole that was my daughter's birth.   She's finally paid off.  And now I have to worry about paying off this surgery.  Am I ever going to climb out of this hole?  So frustrated as I paid off my hospital bill last month and was so THRILLED that'd be an extra $100 to put on other bills.  Well, easy come easy go I guess.  I'm going to call and ask about this though as it seems strange it's so much more expensive.

So prayers please that this surgery goes well and my son has a minimum of scaring and whatnot.
